Portra 400 in Kauai

Portra 400 in Kauai

Portra 400 is the final film I shot, so this is the last Kauai post, I promise.  You can see my Ektar shots here & here, and my Fuji 400H shots here.

Although these shots on the beach are okay, I still think Ektar is where it’s at.

Check out the rainbow!  There’s a rainbow there every single day, which just means it’s virtually impossible to have a bad day on the island.

On the right is our cute bungalow we rented.

And, pictures of the islands would not be complete without a rooster shot.  They run wild.  Everywhere you go, there are chickens.

Shot with Mamyia 645 Pro TL, 110mm, 80mm and 45mm lenses with Portra 400 Film.

Kauai in Fuji 400H

Kauai in Fuji 400H

Armed with only my massive medium format camera and 3 types of film, we traveled to Kauai last month.  You can only imagine the comments I received from other tourists as they pulled out their tiny slick cameras and then I pull out my clunker.  It was comical.

This is my review of the different films shot.  To see shots on Ektar 100, click here and here.

These are the shots on Fuji 400H.  Also, my first time ever shooting this film, so I’m sure I have a million and one ways I can improve the exposure.

I love how this film translated Waimea Canyon.  Especially on this rainy, misty day.

Look at those creamy, yummy skin tones!  Loving the results here.  So much.

Had to sneak a picture of our beloved Jaden.  🙂  Love her skin tones with the 400h, too.

A sopping wet picture of my family.  Thanks Jaden for snapping it.  🙂

Am I morbid for shooting a cemetery?  The thing is, it was BEAUTIFUL.  I mean, look at the marker on the right?  I want to be buried on Kauai under a gorgeous tree with the sunset lighting my marker perfectly.

The water/beach is where Ektar shines over the 400H.  These pictures are just dull, dull, dull.  Don’t dig the colors at all.  I’m guessing it’s completely my fault.  I think I needed to overexpose by 2 or 3 more stops to get better color and more pastels.  But it’s a cute picture of my 4-year old snorkeling with daddy, so here you go.

More Ektar in Kauai

More Ektar in Kauai

Here are more Ektar 100 shots from Kauai.

Our beloved Baby Beach, a 10 step walk from our front door.

The island had so much rain the week we were visiting.  I’m talking 3 feet in one night, flash floods, bridges out, cars swept away.  It was craziness.  The below left picture is Wailua falls, which is normally 2 or 3 small waterfalls.

Spouting Horn and some random tour guide that was serenading the masses.

Shot with Mamyia 645 Pro TL, 110mm, 80mm and 45mm lenses with Ektar 100 Film shot at box speed.

Baby Beach, Kauai

Baby Beach, Kauai

Our home away from home.  We have spent our Spring Break on Baby Beach in Kauai for the last 2 years.  It’s the most perfect place God created in this world, in my own opinion.

I will share more of this beautiful island in future posts, but I’m just so excited about this series I can’t even stand it.  I literally just downloaded the scans from the lab 15 mintues ago and I have already brushed out dust spots and ordered 3 11×14 standouts for the kids’ beach-inspired bathroom.

No, these images are not perfect by any photography standards.  But they are perfect.  To me.  They’re the perfect souvenirs for a perfect family vacation.

Baby Beach, 2012.

Shot on a Mamyia 645 ProTL, 110mm lens at 2.8, Ektar 100 film shot at box speed.

I only took my medium format film camera armed with 3 different films.  Ektar 100 on a whim.  I am so incredibly happy with the results.  I wish I would have shot the entire vacation on this film.  It is perfection for Hawaii.  Bold, colorful, sunny.

Next time.  Next time I will only shoot Ektar 100 on the beach.

Songs of the Season

Songs of the Season

My first grader was part of a magical performance this morning.  Classes I and II presented a vocal concert along with the Upper School Percussion Ensemble and String Ensemble.

I can’t show off any pictures of my cute son, because there are other children in the pictures, and well… I don’t have a model release.  I’m all sorts of careful.

But here are some fun shots of the percussionists and their instruments.

Taken in extremely low light with my Nikon D700 and 70-200 2.8 lens at ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/250 s.

Film.

Film.

Yep.  I’m headed back in time to where it all began for me.

Film.

I had my dad dig out one of his many old medium format cameras (and yes, he shook his head in wonder, I mean, he hasn’t shot them in at least 9 years) and shot my first roll of film since college.

I have some issues to work out.  Apparently, I’ve forgotten how to focus manually.  But other than than, I think I might be in love.  I will for sure be a hybrid shooter from now on, but I might even see myself becoming a film-only shooter very soon.

Here are a few shots from my first roll.  Well, how about I tell the truth.  Here are the ONLY 4 shots that were in focus on my first roll back.

Straight scans from the lab.  No Photoshopping WHAT SO EVER!  How awesome is that?!?!  Amazing.

Shot with my dad’s old Mamyia 645 Pro. 110mm 2.8. Portra 400.

And yes, I may be guilty of bribing my daughter with pony toys if she poses for me.  Works every time.

Rachel Head Shots

Rachel Head Shots

Oh yes, she’s back.  My new muse and friend, Rachel.

And you’re not done seeing this beautiful face, either.  She’s agreed to go on some test shots next week with me to.  I’m venturing back into the world of film.  Oh yeah.  Can’t wait!  We’ll see if I still remember how to work that ancient stuff.  🙂

Rachel is pursuing acting, and she’s in the process of applying to schools all over the country.  These are her head shots.
