It’s cold in Salt Lake City

It’s cold in Salt Lake City

It’s been a cold new year here in Salt Lake City. We went to visit my parents just 2 hours south and woke up to a balmy -17 degrees on the farm. Yes, you read that right – NEGATIVE SEVENTEEN DEGREES!!

Burrrrrrr….

These were taken two days ago in the canyon right before a family session. We went to a campground that is used for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. I was taken back to my freshman year in high school when I was in an amazing class called 4-hour science. We cross country skied up the canyon and then through Yellowstone in the winter. It was magical. I was in shape and tough as nails. It was awesome. I should really pick that up again.

Just for the record, when I took these pictures I was wearing thermals, jeans, snow boots, a sweater, a down coat, a scarf, a hat, gloves and hand warmers in every pocket I had. I was still a little chilly.

That cold sure does make for some gorgeous landscape, though. So crisp and clean. Here is a taste of Utah winter through my eyes.

Songs of the Season

Songs of the Season

My first grader was part of a magical performance this morning.  Classes I and II presented a vocal concert along with the Upper School Percussion Ensemble and String Ensemble.

I can’t show off any pictures of my cute son, because there are other children in the pictures, and well… I don’t have a model release.  I’m all sorts of careful.

But here are some fun shots of the percussionists and their instruments.

Taken in extremely low light with my Nikon D700 and 70-200 2.8 lens at ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/250 s.

Film.

Film.

Yep.  I’m headed back in time to where it all began for me.

Film.

I had my dad dig out one of his many old medium format cameras (and yes, he shook his head in wonder, I mean, he hasn’t shot them in at least 9 years) and shot my first roll of film since college.

I have some issues to work out.  Apparently, I’ve forgotten how to focus manually.  But other than than, I think I might be in love.  I will for sure be a hybrid shooter from now on, but I might even see myself becoming a film-only shooter very soon.

Here are a few shots from my first roll.  Well, how about I tell the truth.  Here are the ONLY 4 shots that were in focus on my first roll back.

Straight scans from the lab.  No Photoshopping WHAT SO EVER!  How awesome is that?!?!  Amazing.

Shot with my dad’s old Mamyia 645 Pro. 110mm 2.8. Portra 400.

And yes, I may be guilty of bribing my daughter with pony toys if she poses for me.  Works every time.
