Rembrandt Lighting

Rembrandt Lighting

During this awesome mentor session, Dave taught me how to achieve Rembrandt Lighting with my two lights.  It’s a super basic light set-up and very common, but man, it can beautiful!

Here’s how we set up my lights.  One to the front side and 45 degrees.  One in back to give her some hair light.

The signature look of Rembrandt Lighting is the illuminated triangle under the eye on the darker side of the face.  It’s funny, after learning this technique, I kept finding it in TV shows and movies.  Go ahead, watch carefully next time you’re in the theater or on the couch.  I bet you find it.

Here is it on the amazingly beautiful and sweet Samantha Law.

On the image above and the one below right, we added a third light shining on the backdrop with a rockin’ homemade snoot Dave had.  It really gives it a completely different feel.

The one below also has the backdrop lit up as well.  And man, Samantha is FLAWLESS.

And here is some of the gorgeous Mckenna.

Have you had enough of my studio work yet?  🙂  Don’t give up on me yet.

I have fallen in love with it.  I told Dave that for a control-freak like me, studio lights rock.  You have total control!

Next post will be Dave’s signature photo booth set up with some awesome action shots.

Friday Fun: Mackenzie

Friday Fun: Mackenzie

Makenzie is a photographer herself, so imagine how nervous I was to shoot her.  Eeek!  She is one of the awesome girls who helped me test new lights at the beginning of January.

The first outfit was taken with a clam shell setup.  One light under and one light over and my setup for soft light.

Between you and me, I’m obsessed with her eyes.  Perfect shape, great makeup, and brown.

This set up was your standard 2-light in front at 45 degrees.

A big thank you to all the girls who helped me out testing lights.  You were all such great sports, and I had a blast.  🙂

Friday Fun: Taylor

Friday Fun: Taylor

Taylor is stunning.  Period.

She’s sweet, a tad bit shy, has a contagious smile and a perfect complexion that makes me jealous.  She is also a soccer star and was named the 2A MVP.

I tell her every time I see her that if soccer doesn’t work out, she’s got a career in modeling – seriously, she’s SO easy to photograph.  But, Taylor already has a scholarship somewhere in Washington State (I forget where).

I’m in love with this dress.  It’s perfection on her.

Seriously, there wasn’t a bad picture of this girl!

She’s even gorgeous in black-and-white.

To see some of Taylors friends that helped me test some lights, look here, here, here, & here.  Mackenzie is up next Friday.  These girls are awesome.

Friday Fun: Lisa

Friday Fun: Lisa

I love Lisa.

For many reasons.  One of them being that she lets me rope her into all sorts of photo shoots.  🙂  And she even drags her friends along for the ride.  I’m telling you, these girls are nothing short of amazing.

This is me practicing with some studio lights I recently bought.  See more images from this session here, here, and here.

My favorite two shots of Lisa from the day.  Love, love, love the unplanned.  They are so beautiful.

Here she is in spring florals and a different light set-up.

Lisa, thank you for EVERYTHING!  You’re beautiful inside and out.

Friday Fun: Haley

Friday Fun: Haley

Haley is a Senior at Waterford, and is one of the awesome girls I roped into testing lights one afternoon (see original post here).  Seriously – these girls are amazing.  They will quite possibly rule our world someday.

She’s a ballerina, and if you’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing the Fine Arts Building at her school, you’re jealous right along side me.

I loved photographing Haley, and not just because she’s beautiful, has creamy skin with cute freckles, or the fact that she loves bright, colorful clothes, or even that she’s going to business school (we totally had a bonding moment over that one as I told her all my favorite professors at the U).  Oh no, this girl is a sweetheart!  We had so much fun.

Oh, and added bonus – she let me do her hair. 🙂  Side note: I should have went to hair school at some point in my life.

My favorite image of her:

Did I mention she loves color?!

Thank you so much, Haley. Thanks for being fun, happy, beautiful and one of the sweetest girls I know.

Friday Fun: Carolin

Friday Fun: Carolin

Friday Fun posts are reserved for me having fun with my camera.  Personal projects, if you will.  Whether it’s testing studio lights or showing of my children, I hope to inspire you [and myself, who are we kidding] to add more fun to this wonderful craft of photography.

I first met Carolin at our wedding 8 years ago.  She was the most elegant, beautiful, well dressed woman I had ever met in my life.  And if you think she’s beautiful on the outside, wait until you meet her in person.  She’s even more beautiful on the inside.

Carolin’s husband and mine (Rob) have worked together for years and years.  Rob knew them when their girls were 4 and 5 years old, and now those girls have grown through babysitting for us straight to adulthood.

I have been dying to get her in front of my lens for a very long time, so when she accepted my invitation to test lighting set ups, I was thrilled.

A quick change of outfits into a more carefree, whimsical dress that she felt fabulous in.

I love the image on the left – pure laughter.  We had so much fun!  She made me shut the door so no one else could see her, but they sure heard us.  We were laughing and giggling the entire time.

I made a vow that day to take better care of my skin and body so that in 20 years I can look as fabulous as she does.  I mean, COME ON!

I’m hoping that this won’t be the last time we see her here.  I’ve got ideas swimming in my head for her.

Thank you, Carolin!  I had such a great time.

Erickson Family

Erickson Family

Meet Becki.

She is the lucky winner of the Let It Snow promotion.  And listen to how sweet she is! Instead of just getting her portraits taken, she gathered all 6 of her siblings (plus one hubby) to get family pictures.  She told me that they have not had family pictures in FOREVER.

Their parents have no idea.

What a great way to use your session!

Here’s the gorgeous family.  Seriously – I have never seen so many beautiful eyes in one family.  Wowza.

Boys and Girls.

The individuals.  Their parents are seriously going to love these.

And if you’re wondering, yes, I did call them by “purple scarf” and “pink scarf”.  And I was humiliated the whole time.  Ugh, I’m HORRIBLE with names!

Is this a good looking family, or is this a good looking family?  I mean, come on!  Thanks for coming out to play in the snow, Ericksons!  I had a great time meeting all of you.

Baylee

Baylee

My cousin recently had a little girl – sweetest little girl.  Oh, how it made me miss tiny little bundles.  Mine are all grown up and get really offended if I call them my babies.  sniff sniff.

Introducing, little Baylee.

PS – Holla to all you infant photographers.  Holy cow – I have to hand it to you.  It’s not as easy as it seems.

Friday Fun: Doorstep of Life

Friday Fun: Doorstep of Life

It’s not high school, per say, that I miss (because honestly, you could not pay me enough to go back there).  I guess it’s the excitement that you are on the doorstep of life.  You’ve just spent 18 years gathering information, skills, curiosities, wonderment, and anticipation to face the world, and you just can’t wait to get out there and explore it yourself.  Find out who you really are.  On your terms.

To me, this is one of the most exciting parts of life.  And while now in my 30’s, I feel that anticipation all of the time – but there’s something about feeling it for the first time as you graduate high school.

Hanging out with these girls (who are in that very place) for 3 hours this week brought back memories of when I was there.  I couldn’t help but be so excited for each of them.  (I’m pretty sure they were sick of my questions about their plans for the future – yes, I am now one of THOSE women).

They’re all good friends (plus one good sport for a mom that I’ve been dying to get in front of my lens) and they’re all so different – some athletes, some artists, some ballerinas.  They are all going off in different directions, universities, and even states in some cases, but they are all in the same place at this very moment.  On the doorstep.

The afternoon was the perfect dynamic of laughter, the constant texting of high schoolers, overtaking the docking station with “cool” music (not that slow, old-woman crap I had going), clothes all over the bathroom and stairs, makeup all over the bathroom counter and collaboration.

For the next 5 Fridays, I will be highlighting each one of these girls/woman (hi Carolin!).  You’re in for a treat – these girls are beautiful.  But for now, here’s a little peak of the group in their candids at the end of the shoot.

Carolin is such a good sport.  Look at her.  Is it really fair for a woman in her 50’s to look THAT AMAZING!?  I can only dream.
