2017 Model Team Reveal Party | Utah Senior Portrait Photographer

2017 Model Team Reveal Party | Utah Senior Portrait Photographer

The ANP 2017 Model Team got together last week for our Reveal Party. I put their images from our styled shoots in a slideshow, make some candied popcorn, chill some drinks and welcome these fabulous girls into the studio. This year’s theme was You Are My Sunshine. These girls really are a ray of sunshine – I feel so lucky to get to work with them over the next year. Wait until you see their images in the next few blog posts – they’re amazing.

Their marketing gift bag has a copy of my 2017 Senior Magazine, cute-as-all-get-out business cards, gumballs, and a gorgeous crystal USB drive with a copy of the slideshow.

5 Steps to Reduce Flyaway Hair

5 Steps to Reduce Flyaway Hair
In preparation for your senior portraits, there are some tips and tricks to help you feel and look your best. Here are 5 steps to reduce flyaway hair!
Spring Blossoms, Senior Portraits, Amanda Nelson Photography
Flyaway hair is a product of frizzy dry hair or static in the hair. To reduce flyaway hair during clothing changes or the humidity in the air, follow these steps to ensure
no flyaways on your picture day!
1. Wash
Wash with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner like “Purelogy Hydrate” (good for all hair types)
2. Condition
Condition damp hair with a light spray of leave in conditioner. “Its a 10” is a great one.
3. Before Styling
While styling, use a smoothing product like “Unite Blow and Set” before drying your hair (always dry your hair with the dryer pointing down your hair shaft to not frizz the cuticle)
4. Styling
After you curl or straighten your hair depending on the look, finish by coating the palms of your hands with “Kuene Shaping Fibers”.
5. Finish
Finish with a working hairspray like “Kenra Platinum Working Hairspray 14” so your hair will move in the photos but NOT look like a helmet head
Quick on set tricks – to reduce fly aways on location:
1. Spray a toothbrush with hairspray and lightly push them in.
2. A thin layer of hand lotion on your palms and lightly wipe the flyaway down
3. Put a dryer sheet over/into a hairbrush and brush lightly
4. If it’s a curly fly away, scrunch with a dryer sheet

Happy New Year | Utah Senior Portraits

Happy New Year | Utah Senior Portraits

Happy New Year! Can you believe it?! Its’ 2016 and it’s going to be awesome.

If you know me well, you might know that I’m a strict enforcer of the 7:30 bedtime routine at our house. Bath/Shower, Read, Snuggles, Sleep. It’s what keeps us (read me) sane in our busy lives. Plenty of sleep (for the kids) and a dependable routine at night (so mommy can edit and catch up on business until all hours of the night). Well, last night we were so excited about ringing in the New Year that we all stayed up until 2:30 AM. Yep, you read that correctly. 2:30 AM! We learned that our kids can hang!

We filled the night playing minute to win it games, Pandemic (my new board game addiction), eating yummy Persian food, enjoying close friends who are more like family, watching our neighbor’s fireworks show that rivals any I’ve seen, and closed the evening with champagne toasts. It was one for the books. We may or may not have slept until 11 AM this morning.

On the business side of things, I have so much to be grateful for. 2015 was my best (and favorite) year in business yet. Not only was it the most profitable (which is important when you’re running a business), but it was filled with clients who shared my vision. Clients who hired me because they see the value of the Amanda Nelson Photography experience and wanted to be part of it.

2016 brings some exciting things on the horizon.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: I’m a huge believer in keeping up on market trends and expanding my photography education. This year I’m looking forward to attending two of the industry’s most sought after conferences. I’ll be learning from and strategizing with national leaders in the senior portrait industry. I’m looking forward to sharing what I learn and applying it to my business.

NEW COLLECTIONS: 2016 will bring new Graduate Collections to your experience.

NEW PRODUCTS: I’m so excited about new products that will be added to the lineup. I have several studio samples on order and can’t wait to show them off.

HAIR & MAKE-UP ARTISTS: To make sure you feel like a million bucks when you step in front of my camera, hair and make-up artists will be a staple of the ANP Senior Portrait experience.

Here’s a huge shout out to the greatest clients ever. Here’s a taste of some gorgeous images we created together

Now Hiring | Photography Assistant

Now Hiring | Photography Assistant

This has to be one of the hardest posts I’ve written. I keep putting it off because secretly I’m hoping she’ll decide that college isn’t all that important, stay home and work for me forever. But alas, Julianna is leaving me for greener, strike that, bluer pastures.

Which means, I am NOW HIRING AN ASSISTANT!

RESPONSIBILITIES:
-assisting with lighting (i.e.reflectors, off camera flash, etc.)
-assisting with (read schlepping ) 10-15 pounds of photo gear
-watching for fly-away hairs, adjusting jewelry, showing bra straps, etc.
-providing occasional comic relief

_DSC4985

See Julianna holding the reflector on the right? That could be YOU!

REQUIREMENTS:
-Must have your own transportation.
-Must be available evenings and weekends (including Sundays).
-Must be perpetually on time. Even better, be early.
-Must be flexible. The weather doesn’t always cooperate.
-Must be respectful, kind and professional.
-Must be okay with being the quiet but oh-so-helpful assistant.
-Must be good with trekking through fields, forests and cities while carrying 10-15 pounds of gear.
-Must sign a non-compete agreement.

_DSC5534

You may just have to make sure horses don’t run away…while crouching and hiding from the camera. FUN, right?!

PERKS:
-Hanging with awesome high school seniors. Seriously, I have the coolest clients.
-I’ve been known to photograph my assistants’ senior portraits as a gift…. just sayin’…it’s happened.
-Learning the fine art of folding a pop-up reflector and changing room. This is a skill that might just change your (read my) life. Or, you might not get the hang of it either. But if you do, you’ll get bonus points.
-Notice that the requirements don’t list anything about previous experience with photography. It’s definitely a bonus, but everything you need to know, I’ll teach you.
-Countless photos of you in action. Whether they’re flattering or not…. bwahahaha

DSC_6350

Yep. For some reason I can’t help myself. These shots make me chuckle. DREAM JOB.

IMG_5214

We might even take Polaroid selfies together.

Email me at hello@amandanelsonphoto.com if you’re interested. I’ll give you more information such as busy seasons, slow seasons, pay, start date etc.

Horseback Riding Lessons

Horseback Riding Lessons

Fair warning, it’s about to get personal up in here with WAY too many pictures. We just started horseback riding lessons and are over-the-moon-in-love with these amazing animals. These images were taken over a course of a few different lessons.

Meet Pumpkin. He’s the most patient pony I’ve ever met and these two kids adore him. There’s a 10 minute love fest before riding lessons start.

Barn Cat

Between the horses, the barn cat and most recently a baby sheep, these two would live at the barn if we let them.

I know exactly how they feel.  All of the sudden, I’m on the look out for horse property that isn’t too far away from the city, much to the shagrin of my husband. It also takes me back to my childhood. One year for Christmas, Santa brought the family a horse. Charlie was his name, and he was the best horse in the world. My dad trained him while in college, and he was the most gentle, patient horse that ever lived. Growing up in a small town, we had the freedom to run across the street, saddle him up, and ride around the neighborhood with all of our friends. What I wouldn’t give to let my children have that kind of life.

Would you like portraits with your horse? I’m your girl! You can see Samantha’s session with her gorgeous horse HERE.
